A Custom Bohemian Cocoon: The Renovation of a 1970s Apartment by HOJE STUDIO

When this young woman in her thirties stepped into her first apartment, she immediately knew she wanted to turn it into a true cocoon. Bright and well laid-out, this 40m² apartment located in the Yvelines region had great potential... but its style was stuck in the 1970s. To transform this space into a warm and functional interior, she called on HOJE STUDIO, specialists in the design and renovation of custom living spaces.

A Project Thought Out Together, Step by Step

HOJE STUDIO’s support began with careful listening to the client’s desires and needs: a space both cozy and bohemian chic where she could feel comfortable every day, with a controlled budget of €30,000. More than a simple renovation task, this project was a genuine collaboration, with every choice made hand-in-hand with the client.

The first step: optimize the space to make it more fluid and pleasant to live in. The apartment had many wasted spaces and unnecessary partitions. To address this, HOJE STUDIO proposed removing the partitions between the entrance and the hallway leading to the kitchen to enlarge the living room and maximize natural light. Similarly, eliminating the vestibule between the WC and the bathroom allowed combining these two areas into a single, more functional bathroom.

A Renovation Designed to Combine Aesthetics and Practicality

Material and color choices were made through showroom visits alongside the client to find solutions that matched her tastes and budget. Materials were selected thoughtfully: a mix of furniture from large retailers like Ikea and Leroy Merlin combined with higher-end elements, especially in the bathroom with Jacob Delafon fixtures.

The kitchen, the apartment’s central element, was designed to be both beautiful and practical. An Ikea solution was chosen with a walnut veneer chevron-patterned countertop, adding an elegant touch. The space was optimized with built-in appliances and a dedicated breakfast nook, including a coffee machine, toaster, and a small bar area.

In the living room, the goal was to create a warm and calming atmosphere. A custom bookshelf was designed to hold books, decorative objects, and plants, enhancing the desired bohemian spirit. Fabric choices also played a key role: velvet for the sofa and curtains, soft natural textures for cushions and rugs.

Custom Layout for the Bedroom

In the bedroom, there was a dual challenge: optimize storage while creating a restful ambiance. A custom closet was designed using BA13 plasterboard, integrating a hanging section and hidden storage behind an elegant curtain, both practical and decorative. A built-in headboard with suspended nightstands was created, freeing up floor space and making cleaning easier. Wall sconces with dimmers were added to provide soft, cozy lighting perfect for evening reading.

Decoration Thought Out Down to the Smallest Detail

To infuse the apartment with a true bohemian chic soul, HOJE STUDIO proposed a palette of autumnal, natural colors. Deep, warm wall shades complemented the light materials such as oak engineered wood flooring and water-green and off-white zellige-style backsplashes.

Every detail was designed to reflect the client’s personality. Her family furniture, like a Louis XVI walnut console and some antique mirrors, were harmoniously integrated into the overall design.
