How to choose the right bathroom tiles: floors, walls, shower... my design and technical tips
For me, tiles are much more than just a surface—they’re a form of expression. I’m always fascinated by how they enrich a space with soul and character. Color and pattern combinations inspire me endlessly. Each tile can be a small piece of art, transforming any room, even a compact one, into a space rich in texture and emotion. In my own bathroom, I want every tile to tell a story, play with light, and create a unique atmosphere. That’s why, when choosing bathroom tiles, I encourage you to consider their visual impact on the entire room.
Use the right formats to visually expand the space
Small bathrooms aren’t limitations—they’re an opportunity to channel your creativity with tiles! I love using formats that give the illusion of spaciousness while adding elegance. The 60×60 cm format, for example, works beautifully on the floor, creating visual unity, fewer grout lines, and easier cleaning! For walls, I suggest mixing formats: large tiles in the shower and smaller 10×30 cm metro-style tiles around the vanity create a subtle, dynamic rhythm.
Harmonizing floor and wall tiles
Avoid rigid “total look” solutions. As a tile enthusiast, I believe in visual fluidity and balance. Choose complementary textures and colors—not identical ones. For example, pair a stone or concrete-look porcelain tile on the floor with glossy, light-colored wall tiles, for a refined feel. Or be bold: a colorful terrazzo floor tile with plain zellige walls for a warm, contemporary touch. The secret? Stay in a cohesive color palette and introduce a subtle grout accent to bridge floor and wall visually.
Tips for small bathrooms
In compact bathrooms, every detail matters. Tiles mean everything: consider horizontal layouts to make the room feel wider, or vertical to enhance height. A trick I love: use the same tiles on the floor and shower walls for a cocoon effect—unified, modern, and seamless. Stick to light hues or subtle patterns to avoid visual clutter.
Grout colors: a small detail, big impact
Grout is often overlooked, but it can make a difference. Epoxy grout, for instance, is durable and perfect for wet areas like showers or vanities. Change the look with colored grout: white grout on white tiles for a minimalist feel, or terracotta, sage, or ochre on neutral tiles for a subtle, modern graphic touch.
Go bold with a decorative backsplash
Just like in the kitchen, the vanity backsplash is the perfect spot to showcase your personality. I love artisanal zellige tiles for their shine and irregularities that catch light beautifully. A bold, patterned, or colorful tile can become a piece of art in a small space—without overwhelming it.
